SUI Status for Exempt and Reimbursable Companies

Most states require that companies operating in their state report and pay this tax. Companies are assigned an experience rate that is used to compute the tax.


How are companies exempt from SUI?

Companies must apply for AND meet state guidelines to be considered SUI exempt. Please check with the state agency to determine what these criteria are and if you qualify.


What is SUI Reimburser?

Some states may require you provide taxable wages with no tax withholdings on an assigned frequency, normally quarterly. Ultimately your experience rate is 0.00%. Please check with your tax consultant.


What is SUI Exempt?

You company has been exempt from reporting or paying wages and taxes associated with Unemployment. Please consult with your tax advisor to verify.


Do states provide a letter of proof of SUI Exemption?

Some states will provide you a letter confirming that you have met all of the requirements of and are considered exempt. Please keep this letter in a safe place.


Can an employee be exempt from SUI when their company isn't exempt? 

There are circumstances were the owner of a company can be considered exempt from SUI. Please check with your tax consultant to see if this applies.
